Private credit is entering a more demanding phase, shaped by liquidity needs, valuation discipline and increasingly selective credit stress.
Credit secondaries face a pricing test.
Ares Management reportedly reduced a proposed European continuation vehicle from around €1 billion to €400 million following valuation pushback. Separately, BlackRock TCP Capital Corp. agreed to sell 95% of a vehicle holding $523 million across 78 companies to Pantheon-backed funds. Secondaries are becoming a core liquidity tool, but price discovery remains essential.
Asset-based finance continues moving towards private capital.
Funds managed by Blackstone agreed to acquire HSBCs A$36 billion Australian loan portfolio, with Pepper Money ANZ appointed as servicer — demonstrating private capital's growing role in bank balance-sheet optimisation.
Lower defaults do not mean lower forward stress.
Fitch Ratings reported June default rates of 2.0% for European leveraged loans and 2.2% for high yield, while its expanding Market Concern lists point to greater prospective stress.
CESEE and the Balkans show why NPL ratios need context.
The latest EBRD monitor put the regional NPL ratio at a record-low 1.86%. Yet NPL stocks rose 4.5% to €28.6 billion and coverage declined to 62.7%. CRE, construction and SMEs remain key areas to watch.
Private debt is becoming more relevant to restructurings.
Oliver Wyman found that more than 80% of respondents considered private debt attractive in restructurings, while over 60% of surveyed financiers expected to reduce risk appetite.
The DDC view: headline indicators remain benign, but dispersion is widening. Opportunity is becoming more sector-specific, with execution, local servicing knowledge and creditor alignment increasingly decisive.
